out of hibernation

Hello! I have been out of this space for a while now, I realize. Lots has happened since my last posting. I have been plowing through classes, work and freelance work. I have made the decision to not continue in classes after this term (only three more weeks!!) for many reasons, but mostly because its post-bacc studies, so its not entirely needed, and, most excitedly, I am going to concentrate on my printing!! I have been doing some freelance letterpress, which has been super great, and have a couple projects coming for some other great people.
Also, we have a publication in the works- more on that later when its more finalized.
I'm super excited about all these projects, and to get going on some that I haven't had time to work on with classes. Lots of good stuff to come!

(above are a couple book cover designs I did for a project in class. I like the geometric aspect, and am thinking about incorporating the patterns into a print project.)

Isn't this place beautiful?!
I don't want to even get started about how much I want to buy a house lately. Probably too much time goes into dreaming about, browsing inspiration online, and collecting pictures. That said, there are so many people out there who work so much on their houses and put so much love into them, and it shows. Enter The Brick House. Super cool. I love reading all the little details, and finding out their real costs. They aren't afraid of bargains, or DIY, and have a thrifting rule about not spending more than $100 on a single item. I think that's a good rule of thumb. We are still on the hunt for a nice credenza, but in this town, it seems that the nicest cheapest ones are around $400-600. That totally breaks that rule.... hmmm. I think we have to head out to the boonies to find the untapped vintage credenza market. Road trip!

A couple random things from my inspiration folder- I love Opening Ceremony's header and design, and a couple textile designs I'm drooling over-Viva Vena's (Vena Cava's lower price point line) Breton dress (possible a tribute to Andre Breton?) and _______. (I have to find the link...) Sometimes I really just want to quit what I'm doing and print textiles to make clothing out of. My lack of knowledge in patternmaking makes me hesitate, but believe me, its in the back of my mind.

brewing beer

We bottled our first batch of homebrew beer yesterday! So exciting. We just have
to wait two weeks now while it sits in the bottles. We may have to do this regularly
to cut down our beer costs. Beer is one thing that our fridge always seems to require.
I attended this tonight- it was thoroughly entertaining and great to chat with some
lovely talented people that I never really get to see. I am always impressed (and slightly
intimidated) by how much talent is really in this city.

I am gradually figuring out my aesthetic, but I don't always know how to translate that into my work. These two images have been in my mind lately. Geometrics, neutrals. I don't know how to be more in the mind about what I make without being too critical.

lost lake and fifth anniversary

We escaped the city for the weekend, and camped in vineyards, drank and ate with old bosses, went to our favorite brewery, and stopped at Lost Lake. We decided that next summer we will be making a much longer stay at this lake. Its so beautiful and quiet. It was the best weekend in some time. Happy five years of marriage!

Rachel Comey!!

These are the ones!!!! I have to explain- I have been lusting after Rachel Comey's boots (specifically the Penpal style) for a couple years now. Last year when they came out, I regretted not snapping them up right away. I tried them on with a friend, and loved them, but put them back. I couldn't really afford them. Fast forward to this year, and thanks to layaway, I will be wearing them in two months!! I am so excited! I feel like I really did my research, and thought about it alot. I can't wait to start pairing them with dresses, jeans, etc. the options are endless!! I just hope I will look as effortless as this. Hooray for boot weather!

These wool blend pants are classic and very comfortable. They are flattering in the rear, and are definitely fitted. I wish I could wear them, but I have discovered that neither wide leg pants or
wool are conducive to my mostly-bicycling life. Getting a beer belly doesn't help- believe me, I am holding my breath in these picture.

I am always inspired most by natural and plant patterns around me. I like to watch shadows, growing things, and animals. When I am feeling stuck on a project, it always helps to go back to nature, and start observing once again. I love that flower that Montmarte posted. So amazing. I have been watching the new season of Project Runway- because yet another Portland designer is on it! Gretchen Jones is amazing talented, and she seems to have a patient and quiet demeanor, which in my opinion is a help in that competition- just like Leanne did previously.

anniversary

its coming up to our fifth wedding anniversary, and when we got married we said we would make each other new rings every year. Well, that didn't really happen, although it would have been a blast. So, since he needs a new one, and I would love to have one to add to my little stacking rings, we are going to go for it! when I saw Fay Andrada's work on Wiksten's blog, I knew it was perfect! This week I'm ordering her Petra ring (above) for me, and a nice handmade band for D from a seller on etsy. As for our anniversary plans, they are shaping up. We are thinking camping near Mt Hood, and then Hood River for a day or so to sample the breweries! Double Mountain Brewery here we come!!

Life has been full of little summer things lately, and I am loving it. Everything is simple, the day is dictated by the weather, and an opportunity to be in the sun isn't turned down. I have enjoyed being online less, but want to take pictures more. I have been finding a creative energy that has been missing. I am taking a summer class starting in a couple weeks, that I am very excited about- and I have also submitted a workshop proposal for a conference next summer! Things are happening, in their own small ways, and I love it.

Beautiful!! So much great work out there. Can't wait to get back into making paper goods. I have some projects that I'm excited to get working on this summer. It has been great being in classes this year, but I have missed all my free time. I just hope that I will be as productive as I would like in my time. I have realized through my design classes that I am definitely drawn to the paper media, versus web and interactive. Elements of the latter are super interesting, but I always go back to the tactile- something you can hold. That is one reason why I am so drawn to books- its an individual experience, yet so universal. One of my hopes for this year is to make it to the NY art book fair in November- sounds amazing. I am hoping for a whirlwind three day trip. I want to pack so much in!! Stay tuned for more details on that!

also- one reason I'm happy about the new school requirement of getting a laptop for fall is getting one of these beautiful felt and leather covers.

I guess I've been into pop up books and cut paper lately, partially because I've been researching Paul Rand for a project at school. His work is always reminiscent of cut paper, and so graphically bold. The pictures above are of Johnny Kelly's work, from a feature on grain edit.

Lena and Maria are two of my favorite artists, and their publication venture has been tip-top! (to no surprise of course, coming from those two ladies!) I have collected all of their artist series, and have a couple to get still in the journal series. They are a great visual inspiration for anyone's library, along with being something that I love to take a moment here and there to flip through in the middle of the day. I was excited to get an email about their newest book, coming out in June, Sundays are for lovers, available for pre-order now! They are taking turns this year curating a book each, and this one is Maria's contribution.
I can't wait to get mine in the mail!

I thought I would start with some posts of people and things that have been inspiring me lately. Betsy is one of them. She always seems to be making new stuff, and I seem to spot her work around town frequently. Her style is unique, and one that I am always drawn to. Enjoy!

Betsy Walton is a local Portland artist, and I just recently stumbled upon her joint blog with her studiomates. She shared her recent Spoonflower patterns (middle picture), and I love that she did some custom Keds with them. I think I might have to order some! I always love seeing Betsy’s work in person, especially her paintings. She is constantly making, and that alone is inspiring to me.

welcome to my new little spot on the web. I hope this will work well for all of us. I have missed posting things to the internet, and hope that this will motivate me to keep it going again.
